economies
- 1Plural of economy.
Several emerging economies posted strong growth despite global uncertainty.
Rising fuel prices put pressure on import-dependent economies.
Note
Two quite different plurals share this spelling. One counts systems of production and trade (emerging economies, import-dependent economies), the familiar plural of news and policy writing. The other counts acts of thrift. To make economies is to find savings or cut costs, a countable use of the meaning 'frugal use of resources.' The verb usually tells them apart: economies grow and struggle, but people make them.
