eights
- 1Plural of eight.
The rowing club entered two eights in the regatta.
All the eights in the deck had already been played.
Note
A regular -s plural that carries over every countable use of the number: written figures, playing cards, racing boats and the crews who row them. In rowing, the same word names both the boat and the people in it, so "two eights" at a regatta can mean two craft or two crews, and usually means both. A race between such boats is also an eight, so the plural can cover several of those races too.
- 2In poker, a pair of cards both ranked eight, held together as a single playing hand.
He raised hard, confident his eights were the best hand at the table.
Two players showed eights and split the pot down the middle.
Note
Poker talk lets the bare plural stand for the whole hand: say someone holds eights and the pair is understood. Although it names a single hand, the word stays plural and takes a plural verb, as in "his eights were good." In the ordinary plural, eights in a deck simply means several cards. At the table it means exactly two that match. It is slang, so keep it to card-playing contexts.
