electrics
- 1All the electrical components and wiring of a machine or system, considered together.
The boat's electrics needed a complete overhaul after years at sea.
We had to have the electrics redone before the council would sign off on the new extension.

Note
A Commonwealth way of treating a machine's wiring and parts as one whole: the boat's electrics, the house's electrics. It looks like a plural, but nothing is being counted, so it has no singular here; a single faulty wire is not "an electric." Keep it apart from the ordinary plural, which counts separate electric machines such as cars or trains.
- 2Plural of electric.
Touring guitarists often travel with several electrics and a single acoustic for quieter sets.
The auction featured rare electrics built in the late 1950s.
Note
An ordinary count plural, resting on the informal habit of letting electric stand for a whole machine: an electric car or train, an electric toothbrush, an electric typewriter. Context tells you which machine is meant. Dennis Barton's Red Star 4: Victory (2004) writes of "four-wheel drive electrics" for vehicles. Because each item is counted, it stays distinct from the Commonwealth word for wiring.
