emails
- 1Plural of email.
The lawyer printed all the emails for the court file.
Thousands of emails flooded the server during the outage.
Note
The plural only belongs to the countable uses of email: individual messages, and, informally, the addresses they go to, as in a sign-up sheet that collects emails. The medium itself and the volume of mail stay uncountable. So a full inbox can hold "a lot of email" or "a lot of emails": the first treats it as a mass, and the second counts the messages one by one.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of email.
The system automatically emails a receipt after each purchase.
Whenever a flight changes, the airline emails its passengers.
Note
The -s form carries every pattern the verb has. It can take the person as its object (the airline emails its passengers) or the thing sent (emails a receipt). It can also take both at once, with the person first: she emails him the agenda. It even stands alone with no object at all, meaning simply to send messages, as when someone rarely emails and prefers to call.
She emails him the agenda every Monday morning.
He rarely emails; he would rather pick up the phone.
