embarked
- 1Simple past and past participle of embark.
The passengers embarked at the busy port in the early morning.
Having embarked on the expedition, the crew set their course south.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the simple past (the passengers embarked at dawn) and the participle after have (they had embarked). Only the transitive uses form a true passive. Those uses mean putting people or cargo aboard, or committing money or persons to an affair: the troops were embarked; his savings were embarked in the scheme. The same transitive form can also mean covered with bark, a meaning unrelated to ships.
