engineered
- 1Simple past and past participle of engineer.
She engineered the company's turnaround over two difficult years.
The vaccine was engineered using a novel delivery platform.
Note
One spelling serves both the simple past and the past participle, so the clause decides which it is. On its own it is finite (she engineered the deal). After have it forms the perfect, and after be the passive. The verb's whole range travels with it, from design and genetic alteration to winning something by guile, so engineered a promotion hints at scheming. Before a noun, it shades into the adjective of engineering methods.
- 2Designed and built using engineering methods and principles.
The engineered alloy performed well under extreme heat.
Modern bridges rely on precisely engineered components that share the load.
Similardesigned, manufactured, fabricated
Note
Unusually for a participle adjective, it grades: work can be more engineered or most engineered. In James Warner's Practical Handbook of Grouting (2004), "more engineered" means more quantified and less subjective. Christopher G. Powell (1996) applies it to calculated frame construction replacing old bulk masonry. In the comparative, the word praises a method's rigor rather than simply naming how a thing was made.
