errored
- 1Simple past and past participle of error.
The login script errored before completing the request.
The overnight build errored on its final step and never finished.
Note
Most at home when software fails: a script or build that errored stopped and reported an error. The one form serves as both past tense and past participle (it has errored twice today). Used to mean simply "made a mistake," as a stand-in for erred, it is nonstandard, so careful writers keep errored for machines and erred for people. The spelling is shared with the telecommunications adjective.
- 2Containing one or more errors, and therefore faulty or incorrect.
The errored transmission was sent again automatically by the receiver.
Engineers traced the fault to a single errored packet in the data stream.
Similarcorrupted, faulty, corrupt, defective
Note
An engineer's adjective for units of data that arrive damaged: an errored bit, symbol, block or line. It also builds measurements. Roger L. Freeman's Telecommunication System Engineering (2004) defines an errored second as any one-second interval containing at least one bit error. The word sits before the noun it qualifies, and a single wrong bit is enough to make the whole unit errored.
