essayed
Saye-SAYD/ɛˈseɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of essay.
The young pianist essayed a difficult passage in front of the panel.
By thirty, the author had essayed several genres before settling on poetry.
Note
One regular -ed form serves both jobs: she essayed a reply; he has essayed three genres. When it means attempting, the verb takes a direct object and has a dated, literary air, so it suits deliberate prose rather than everyday talk. A rarer intransitive use means moving forth, as into battle. Don't confuse it with assayed: the old noun essay once meant a test, but that meaning now belongs to assay.
