estimating
SayES-ti-may-ting/ˈɛs.tɪˌmeɪt.ɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of estimate.
The contractor is estimating the price of the new roof.
Estimating crowd sizes from aerial photographs is notoriously difficult.
Note
The -ing form does two jobs, and the words around it show which one. After a form of be, it is the verb in progress: she is estimating the damage. As a subject, or after a preposition, it works as a noun but can still take an object: skilled at estimating costs. In both uses it keeps the verb's sense of judging from imperfect data. The final e of estimate drops before -ing.
