ewwed
- 1Simple past and past participle of ew.
He ewwed at the slimy texture and pushed his plate away.
Everyone in the group ewwed when the dissection began.
Note
A verb made out of a sound of disgust, and still a rare, colloquial one. It works both with and without an object: you can ew at a slimy texture, or simply ew a suggestion. Adding -ed doubles the w, so ewwed is also the past of eww, the stretched-out spelling. One written form serves both, and the reader cannot tell which bare spelling the writer had in mind.
- 2Simple past and past participle of eww.
She ewwed loudly at the sticky residue left on the counter.
Several teammates ewwed when the locker room door swung open.
Note
A doubled w in eww stretches the sound, the written version of a drawn-out groan. As a verb it is only another spelling of ew, and its past lands on the same ewwed as the past of ew. Other uses of the letters belong to the bare form alone and never take -ed: the station code for Ewell West and the abbreviation for an extreme wind warning.
