exceeded
- 1Simple past and past participle of exceed.
Demand for the tickets exceeded supply within minutes of the release.
The runner's time exceeded the previous record by two full seconds.
Note
One regular -ed form does double duty as past tense and past participle. Because the verb is mostly transitive, the participle turns passive easily: a limit is exceeded, expectations were exceeded. After have it marks a completed surpassing (sales have exceeded forecasts). The old intransitive use meaning 'to go too far' is obsolete, so modern English nearly always names what was gone beyond.
The speed limit was exceeded on nearly every stretch of the highway.
This year's sales have already exceeded our forecasts.
