exceptions
- 1Plural of exception.
Every grammar rule seems to have its share of stubborn exceptions.
The committee granted several exceptions for students with documented hardships.
Note
A regular -s plural that gathers every countable use of exception at once: the stubborn cases a rule fails to cover, the legal objections and the conveyancing clauses by which a grantor reserves something, and, in programming, the error conditions one part of a program throws and another catches. When exception means the act of excluding, or offense taken, its uncountable use has no plural.
