experiences
- 1Plural of experience.
Her years abroad left her with rich experiences to draw on.
The survey asked patients to describe their experiences with the new treatment.
Note
Only some meanings of the noun allow this plural. Experiences counts separate events or activities, the things that happened to you or that you did. Experience as gathered knowledge stays uncountable: a candidate has experience in a trade, not experiences. The same spelling is also the verb form (she experiences), and an adjective or article before it (rich experiences, the experiences) marks the noun.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of experience.
She experiences a wave of nerves before every performance.
The coastal town experiences frequent storms during the wet season.
Note
The present-tense form for a single third-person subject, as in she experiences or the town experiences. The verb is transitive, so it needs an object such as a feeling, a process or a run of events. One experiences delays; one does not simply experience. With I, you, we or they the bare form experience returns. A subject before it and an object after it tell it apart from the plural noun.
