extending
ek-STEN-ding/ɛkˈstɛndɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of extend.
The committee is extending the deadline by two weeks.
Extending the contract required approval from both parties.
Note
One -ing form does two jobs here. With a form of be it builds the progressive (they are extending the lease), and on its own it heads a noun phrase as a gerund. Because extend works both with and without an object, so does this form: extending an invitation or extending an arm takes one, while a wall extending to the river simply describes reach.
