eyeing
SayY-ing/ˈaɪɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of eye.
She stood by the door, eyeing the crowd for a familiar face.
The buyers had been eyeing the property long before it went on sale.
Note
The -ing form carries every verb sense of eye. Mostly that means watching with intent, and it takes its object directly: you are eyeing a rival, never eyeing at one. As a gerund it also belongs to the kitchen and the hatchery: the eyeing of potatoes cuts out their buds, and fish eggs are eyed when their dark eye spots show. The old intransitive sense, 'to appear,' is obsolete.
