falsest
SayFAWLS-istUS/ˈfɔlsɪst/UK/ˈfɔːlsɪst/AUS/ˈfoːlsɪst/
- 1Superlative of false.
Of all his promises, that one proved the falsest.
Critics called it the falsest claim in the entire speech.
Note
A one-syllable adjective ending in silent e, false simply takes -st to form its superlative. The form suits the gradable meanings: a claim can be more or less untrue, a friend more or less deceitful or treacherous. It does not fit the Boolean-logic sense, where a value is either false or it is not. The periphrastic most false remains available alongside it.
