fashioned
- 1Simple past tense and past participle of fashion.
The jeweler fashioned a necklace from sea glass and silver wire.
These stone tools were fashioned by hand thousands of years ago.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. In "she fashioned a bowl" it is the simple past. In "a bowl fashioned from clay" it is the participle, which builds passives and perfects. The verb usually means making something by hand, often roughly or with whatever is to hand. Its older meanings, to fit or adapt something to a purpose, now sound dated, so a phrase like "fashioned to the occasion" reads as period prose.
- 2Made or put together in a particular style or manner, typically signaled by a describing word.
Their newly fashioned constitution borrowed heavily from older models.
The hall was lined with strangely fashioned pillars unlike any he had seen.
Similarcrafted, constructed, built, designed, shaped
Note
A word that almost never stands alone: it needs a modifier in front to say which style, as in old-fashioned, newly fashioned or strangely fashioned. With old it fuses into a compound, usually hyphenated before a noun (old-fashioned furniture), though the open spelling also appears. Jonathon Mcluskie's title Thai Fashioned Trouble (2017) shows the slot is still open: almost any style-word can fill it.
- 3Following the current fashion; stylish and up to date.
It was there also that, untill 1783, the famous Carlin performed his italian jokes, then very fashioned , and to which, since, has succeeded nobler kind of plays.
1846, J. C. G. MARIN DE P***, A Fortnight in ParisSimilarstylish, fashionable, modish, trendy
Oppositeunfashionable, outdated, dated
Note
Praise for being in vogue, and it nearly always travels with very: a very fashioned tie, a very fashioned look and manner. Fanny Burney uses it of two handsome, accomplished sisters. Without the intensifier, the word is easily heard as the verb's past form, meaning made or shaped. In everyday writing, fashionable says the same thing with no risk of misreading.
- 4Designed with skill and put together well, showing careful craft.
The watch was a finely fashioned instrument, accurate to the second.
Her argument was so cleverly fashioned that no one could refute it.
Similarcrafted, wrought, constructed, built, designed
Note
Here the praise goes to the making, not to the trend. Its natural companions are orderly and well prepared: a very fashioned and orderly manner. Because it also takes very, it can look like the "stylish" meaning. To tell them apart, ask whether something is admired for its craft or for being current. Pittard's Race & History (2014) grades it with less ("less fashioned, less well prepared"), treating it as a matter of degree.
