fatter
USFAT-er/ˈfætɚ/FAT-uh/ˈfætə/
- 1Comparative of fat.
The pigs grew fatter as the autumn troughs filled with grain.
This cut of beef is fatter than the one the butcher showed us yesterday.
Note
The t doubles because fat is a single short-voweled syllable ending in one consonant, the same pattern as thin and thinner. The comparative follows fat into each of its living senses: a fatter pig, a fatter book, a fatter profit, a fatter sauce. Only the obsolete meaning "dull, stupid" is left behind. The periphrastic more fat is generally avoided in standard usage.
