features
- 1Plural of feature.
The latest update added several new features for editing photos.
Mountain ranges share certain geological features formed over millions of years.
Note
In the plural, the word ranges from the face to software. Her features means the parts of her face taken together, while new features in an update are capabilities. In newspapers and magazines, features are the long pieces kept apart from the news, and in cinema the plural can be short for feature films. The form never changes, so context alone tells these meanings apart.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of feature.
The documentary features interviews with several former astronauts.
Their new album features a different guest singer on every track.
Note
Two constructions share this one form, and they point in opposite directions. Used transitively, the work does the showing: the film features a young actor. Used intransitively, the person does the appearing: the actor features in the film, usually followed by in. An older, now dated use lets a child feature a parent, meaning resemble in face. The same spelling is also the noun plural.
She features in three episodes of the new series.
The boy features his grandfather about the eyes.
