fed up
- 1Annoyed, frustrated, or tired to the limit of one's endurance, especially by something that has gone on too long.
Commuters are fed up with the constant delays on the morning trains.
By the third week of rain, everyone in the house was thoroughly fed up.
Similarfrustrated, exasperated, annoyed, disgruntled
Note
Its partner preposition is with (fed up with the delays, fed up with being ignored) though British speakers also say fed up of. It can run straight into an -ing verb as well: fed up waiting, fed up watching football on TV. The phrase is informal and idiomatic; exasperated or weary of keeps a formal sentence level.
- 2Past tense and past participle of feed up. Chiefly British.
Volunteers fed up the starving horses for months before anyone could ride them.
The underweight lambs were fed up on rich pasture before the fall sale.
Note
Feed up makes its past with the irregular fed, and one spelling serves both past tense and participle: the shelter fed up the kittens; the kittens were fed up on milk. A pronoun goes between the parts, as in fed them up. Food is the test that separates it from the "annoyed" adjective: fed up on milk is nourishment, fed up with the noise is patience run out.
