feedbacks
- 1Plural of feedback. Nonstandard; feedback is normally uncountable.
The product team sorted the customer feedbacks into separate categories.
Several feedbacks pointed to the same usability problem.
Note
A plural that usage guides object to, because the noun behind it is usually uncountable: feedback is normally treated as a mass of returned response, not a set of separate items. The plural turns up mostly in technical and business writing, where it means individual responses or distinct channels. In careful prose, keep the noun uncountable (much feedback, some feedback) or count it another way, with pieces of feedback or comments.
- 2Third-person singular present of feedback. Rare; the usual form is feeds back.
Note
One spelling, two jobs: the same letters also serve as the disputed plural noun, so position tells them apart. Here the word follows a singular subject and does something. Its grammar shifts with its meaning. An amplified guitar feedbacks on its own, with no object, as it begins to howl. A reviewer who feedbacks a colleague takes a direct object, because the verb means giving assessment to someone.
