fellows
- 1Plural of fellow.
Several fellows from the club volunteered to help with the move.
The older fellows at the workshop offered the apprentice plenty of advice.
Note
The plural is where several meanings of fellow feel most at home: companions and comrades, animals of one herd or flock, objects that belong to a set, people sharing the same plight. Before a noun, fellow stays singular in form even when the meaning is plural: fellow travelers, fellow students, never fellows students. The same spelling also serves the archaic verb form, but the noun counts things while the verb takes an object.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of fellow. Obsolete.
Note
The -s form used after he, she, it or a singular noun, from a verb whose every meaning is archaic, obsolete or poetic. Poets kept it longest in the sense of matching or equaling: no star fellows her eyes. Older prose used it with to or with to mean joining someone in company or partnership, often reflexively (he fellows himself with rogues). One harsher use meant calling someone "fellow" as an insult.
