films
- 1Plural of film.
Several documentary films competed for the top award this year.
He keeps a shelf of classic films on disc beside his desk.
Note
A regular -s plural, but not every meaning of film will take it. Film as an art form, as in a student of film, is uncountable and has no plural. Films means individual movies, units of camera stock, or thin layers, as in oily films on water. The same spelling is also the verb form for he, she, it; word order usually settles which: the films versus she films.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of film.
The director films most of her scenes in natural light.
A small crew films the wildlife from a hidden blind near the river.
Note
Filming can take an object or do without one. You can say she films the wildlife, or simply she films at dawn. The same -s form also carries the rarer sense of covering something with a thin skin, so a sauce that films a spoon has coated it, not recorded it. With I, you, we and they, the bare form film returns.
