fished
- 1Simple past and past participle of fish.
The villagers fished these coastal waters for generations.
He had fished the same quiet stretch of shore since childhood.
Note
A single spelling covers both jobs, as with any regular verb: the simple past (they fished all morning) and the participle after have (she has fished here for years). Because several senses of fish take an object, such as a stretch of water or a bait, the participle also forms passives: the bay was fished for pearls. Intransitive uses have no passive, like a batsman who fished outside off stump.
- 2Containing fish, or loaded with a large quantity of them.
Note
A rare adjective that measures a boat by the fish it carries. Francis Day's The Fishes of Great Britain and Ireland (1880–1884) reports trawl boats "very poorly fished" until frosty weather brought splendid takes. It is gradable (more fished, most fished) and pairs naturally with a degree word such as poorly. Do not confuse it with the past participle: a fished river has been fished, but a poorly fished boat came home nearly empty.
