flatted
SayFLAT-id/ˈflætɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of flat.
The trumpeter flatted the third to give the melody a bluesy color.
She flatted every B in the passage, as the key signature required.
Note
The final t doubles before -ed, and the form does most of its work in music: a player flats a note by lowering it, usually by half a tone, and that note is then flatted. Using it to mean making something level is now dated, and flatten has largely taken over that job. In slang the form also covers calling a bet without raising.
