flavors
UK spellingflavours
- 1Plural of flavor.
The bakery changes its muffin flavors with the seasons, adding pumpkin in the fall.
The app comes in two flavors: a free version with ads and a paid one without.
Note
It is the countable meanings that take this plural. A shop sells ice cream flavors, a label lists natural and artificial flavors, and in casual use software comes in several flavors, meaning versions. Taste as an overall quality is usually uncountable (a stew full of flavor), so the plural points to distinct tastes or varieties. The same spelling serves the verb form: she flavors soup with thyme.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of flavor.
The chef flavors each dish with herbs from the garden.
A drop of vanilla flavors the entire batch of cream.
Note
The same spelling does double duty: it is also the plural of the noun, as in the flavors of a candy or a cough medicine, so only the sentence tells verb from noun. As a verb it always takes an object (the cook flavors a sauce) and usually names the ingredient with "with." The spelling, like the word it comes from, is the American one.
