flaws
SayFLAWZUS/flɔz/UK/flɔːz/
- 1Plural of flaw.
The inspector noted several structural flaws in the bridge's design.
Critics pointed out the flaws in the argument before the debate ended.
Note
The plural takes a plain -s, but it carries every meaning of the singular, and context decides which. A jeweler's flaws are inclusions and stains in a stone. A lawyer's are defects that can invalidate a contract. Elsewhere they are cracks, gaps or hidden faults. Older English also used flaws for flakes, fragments or thin cakes of ice. Those senses are now obsolete, so in old texts the word may mean pieces rather than faults.
