fled
- 1Simple past and past participle of flee.
The rebels fled into the mountains as government troops advanced.
By the time police arrived, the suspect had fled through a back door.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the simple past (they fled) and the participle after have or had (they had fled). It carries both of flee's constructions. Used intransitively, it usually takes a direction (fled into the hills). Used transitively, it takes its object directly, with no from required: they fled the city. A looser use describes something vanishing quickly, as when hope or color fled.
Thousands fled the city before the storm made landfall.
The color fled from her face when she read the letter.
