flyest
- 1Superlative of fly.
She showed up in the flyest jacket on the block.
That was easily the flyest car in the whole lot.
Note
A slang superlative built the regular way: fly plus -est, with the y kept rather than changed to i. Every adjective sense of fly is slang. It can mean sharp-witted (now dated), sneaky, stylish or good-looking, so flyest stays in that casual register. In a phrase like the flyest jacket it means the most stylish. The same spelling also serves the archaic thou-form of the verb, and the pronoun thou tells them apart.
- 2Second-person singular simple present indicative of fly. Archaic, used with thou.
Note
The verb ending that once went with thou, as in thou flyest, thou goest, thou seest. It is archaic, so it suits deliberate imitations of older or poetic English rather than ordinary prose, where you fly does the work. In such writing it can carry the old poetic sense "flee" as readily as "travel through the air": thou flyest from danger, not only thou flyest over the hills.
