founds
- 1Third-person singular simple present of found.
The trust founds a fresh scholarship whenever its endowment grows.
The novel follows a pastor who founds a church in a frontier town.
Note
Only one of the two verbs spelled found can take this ending. The found that is the past of find has finds as its present. Founds belongs to the separate verb meaning to establish, to build on, or to melt metal and cast it. That verb is regular, so its past is founded: a trust founds a scholarship today and founded one last year.
- 2Plural of found.
The combmaker kept several founds on the bench for shaping the teeth.
Fresh founds cut the horn far more cleanly than the old ones did.
Note
A workshop plural: of the nouns spelled found, only the comb-maker's thin, single-cut file can be counted. Found meaning board and lodging is uncountable, and found as the furnace's hottest interval takes no plural. So founds names several of these files, and it should not be confused with the verb meaning "establishes", which shares the spelling.
