fruited
- 1Containing pieces of fruit as an ingredient, or, of a plant, bearing fruit.
The fruited scones sold out within minutes at the bakery.
Heavily fruited vines lined the sunny slopes of the valley.
Note
The adjective follows the two halves of its meaning. In cookery it marks fruit added to a dish, as in a fruited tomatillo salsa. Of plants it means bearing fruit, most memorably in "the fruited plain" of Katherine Lee Bates's America the Beautiful (1895). Botanists also pair it with a size word to sort plants by the fruit they bear: small fruited and large fruited species of pear.
- 2Simple past and past participle of fruit.
The orchard fruited abundantly after a wet spring.
Several cacti had fruited by the end of the season.
Note
The verb is regular, so one spelling covers both "the orchard fruited" and "the orchard has fruited." Because the verb means producing fruit, seeds or spores, it usually takes no object: a cactus, a vine or a fungus simply fruits. The same spelling also serves as the "bearing fruit" adjective, which sits before a noun rather than after have.
- 3In heraldry, bearing fruit or acorns, usually depicted in a specified tincture.
The blazon described a fruited vine running across the lower field.
A fruited oak, the acorns rendered in gold, dominated the escutcheon.
Note
Blazon places it after the plant and before a color: an oak tree fruited or, a pear tree fruited proper. That order lets the fruit carry a different tincture from the tree itself, so an apple tree or, fruited gules is a gold tree hung with red apples. Fruited proper shows the fruit in natural colors, as in the punning apple-tree arms of the Dutch Appelbooms.
