generations
- 1Plural of generation.
Stories about the great flood survived across countless generations of villagers.
The mill employed several generations of the same farming families.
Note
Counting generations can mean steps of descent, as in three generations of one family, or spans of about thirty years each. In the second meaning the plural works like a unit of time, much as years does: for generations, two generations ago, over many generations. Either way it takes a plural verb (whole generations were lost), even when the group is pictured as a single cohort.
