Note
The -ing form does two jobs. After a form of be it makes the progressive (she was gesturing toward the door); elsewhere it heads a participial clause or a gerund phrase. It can stand alone or take an object: gesturing assent, gesturing someone to come closer. Tell it from the noun for the activity by its company: the verb takes adverbs and objects (gesturing wildly), the noun takes adjectives and even a plural (exaggerated gesturings).
