glimpsed
SayGLIMPST/ɡlɪm(p)st/
- 1Simple past and past participle of glimpse.
He glimpsed a familiar face in the crowd before it vanished.
The hikers had glimpsed the summit through a sudden break in the clouds.
Note
One spelling does two grammatical jobs: she glimpsed it, and it had been glimpsed. Only the transitive uses take the passive. These cover catching sight of a face or object and, figuratively, perceiving something intangible such as a possibility. So a figure can be glimpsed through fog. The intransitive use runs with at or upon (he glimpsed at the letter). In that construction it means much the same as glanced.
