guessed
- 1Simple past and past participle of guess.
He guessed the number of jellybeans in the jar and won the prize.
Nobody could have guessed how the trial would end.
Note
One regular -ed form does two jobs: the simple past (she guessed) and the participle behind perfect and passive verbs (has guessed, was guessed). It carries every meaning of guess, from loose speculation to hitting on the right answer, and the passive suits that second meaning best: a riddle that was never guessed is one nobody solved. In casual American speech, I guessed can simply mean I supposed.
