gyms
- 1Plural of gym.
New gyms opened in two neighborhoods this spring.
The chain operates dozens of gyms across the state.
Note
A plural that covers two kinds of room. Gym began as a clipping of gymnasium, so gyms can be school gymnasiums or the commercial halls full of weights and cardio machines that the word now often means. The clipping of gymnastics is uncountable and has no plural. Pupils do gym as a subject, but a town can have several gyms.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of gym. Chiefly Australian, Indian and South African.
My brother gyms after his evening shift most nights.
She gyms harder in the months leading up to a competition.
Note
The present-tense form of a verb used in Australia, India and South Africa, where to gym simply means to go to the gym. It is intransitive and takes no object: she gyms after work, he gyms three times a week. Outside those regions, "goes to the gym" is the safer phrasing for a general audience.
