happened
HAP-uhnd/ˈhæpənd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of happen.
The accident happened just before midnight on the highway.
By the time help arrived, the worst had already happened.
Note
One spelling does double duty for the past and the participle: it happened, it has happened. The everyday verb is intransitive, so the participle forms perfects with have but no ordinary passive. Avoid "was happened." Before an infinitive the form carries the chance meaning instead, as in she happened to be passing. There it says that something came about unplanned, not that an event took place.
