hmmed
SayHMMD/hm̩d/
- 1Simple past and past participle of hmm.
The teacher hmmed at the unexpected answer before moving on.
She hmmed in agreement as he laid out the plan.
Note
A regular past form built on a sound rather than a word: hmm simply takes -ed, and the same spelling serves both "she hmmed" and "she has hmmed." Because the verb is intransitive, it takes no direct object. What prompts the sound is introduced with a preposition, as in hmmed at the answer or hmmed over the menu. It has no connection to HMM, the initialism for hidden Markov model.
