howled
SayHOWLD/haʊld/
- 1Simple past and past participle of howl.
The wind howled through the empty valley after dark.
The wolves had howled for hours before the hunters arrived.
Note
A regular past form: the -ed ending does double duty, so one spelling serves the simple past (the wolves howled) and the participle after have (they had howled for hours). Usually it takes no object, whether the sound comes from an animal, a person in distress or the wind. The "utter with outcry" use is the exception. There it takes the words shouted as its object, as in a crowd that howled its anger.
