hubris
HYOO-bris/ˈhjuːbɹɪs/
Pluralhubrises
- 1Excessive pride, presumption, or arrogance, originally the kind shown toward the gods.
The CEO's hubris led him to dismiss every warning from his own engineers.
Critics saw sheer hubris in the senator's promise to end the war in a week.
Similararrogance, pride, conceit, presumption
Note
The Greek word behind it, húbris, was harsher than the English one, covering insolence and even sexual outrage. English keeps the idea of overstepping a limit, and it is a word of judgment, usually aimed at the powerful: a president's hubris and egotism, a company that exudes hubris. It is stronger than pride, which can be healthy; hubris never is.
