hyphening
SayHY-fuhn-ing/ˈhaɪ.fən.ɪŋ/
- 1Present participle of hyphen. Dated; hyphenating is now usual.
Note
Hyphen as a verb is now dated, and hyphenate has taken over its work. Hyphening and hyphenating mean the same thing, but the shorter form sounds older on the page. Like any -ing form, it serves as a participle (she is hyphening the compounds) and as a gerund that still takes an object (hyphening every prefix slows the reader). Writers aiming for a current voice will usually reach for hyphenating.
