identifies
- 1Third-person singular simple present of identify.
The detective identifies the suspect from a single fingerprint.
A good field guide identifies birds by their song and markings.
Note
The -s form follows the y-to-ies spelling of carry and try: identify becomes identifies. Most uses are transitive, with an object that is named or classified, as when a guide identifies a species. The affinity sense works differently. It takes with, either on its own (she identifies with the narrator) or reflexively (he identifies himself with the cause). Without with, the verb is about naming, not belonging.
She identifies with the narrator more than with any other character.
He identifies himself with the reform movement.
