impacting
- 1Present participle and gerund of impact.
The new tariffs are impacting small manufacturers far more than large corporations.
Heavy rains are impacting crop yields throughout the valley.
Note
The -ing form does double duty: it carries the progressive (heavy rains are impacting yields) and also works as a verbal noun (impacting the market was never the aim). Its figurative use for 'strongly affecting' is proscribed, and many careful readers object to it, so in formal writing affecting or having an impact on is the safer choice. The physical senses remain: one body impacting another, or machinery impacting loose material together.
