infers
- 1Third-person singular present of infer.
From the muddy boots by the door, she infers that he crossed the field on foot.
The detective infers the suspect's route from a trail of scattered evidence.
Note
The form a careful writer reaches for when someone draws a conclusion: she infers that he walked, the detective infers a route from the evidence. Using it to mean "implies" (the facts infer guilt) is often proscribed. A simple test keeps them apart: the evidence implies, the person reading it infers. Older meanings, causing harm or bringing a topic into discussion, are now obsolete.
