injured
- 1Suffering from an injury.
The injured climbers were airlifted off the mountain to a hospital.
Several spectators were injured when the temporary stand collapsed.
Oppositeunhurt, unharmed, uninjured, unscathed
Note
Unlike the verb form, the adjective is gradable. One climber can be more injured than another, and the most injured are the worst hurt. It sits naturally before a noun (the injured climbers). After was or were, it blurs with the passive verb. A by-phrase naming what caused the harm points to the verb, while a comparison with more points to the adjective.
- 2Simple past and past participle of injure.
The storm injured several people who were standing near the windows.
He has injured the same shoulder twice this season.
Note
One regular -ed form does double duty: it is the simple past (the storm injured them) and the participle that follows have in the perfect and be in the passive. The verb behind it reaches beyond bodies, so the same form can mean damaged or impaired, as in an injured reputation, or wronged, when someone has been done an injustice.
