instructed
- 1Simple past and past participle of instruct.
The judge instructed the jury to disregard the witness's final remark.
He had instructed his staff to forward every call to his assistant.
Note
A regular -ed form doing double duty: one spelling serves as the simple past (the judge instructed the jury) and as the participle after have or be (she was instructed to wait). Because instruct is transitive in all its verb uses, the passive comes naturally. In legal use, the client is the one who instructs and the lawyer is the one instructed. Older English also had a shorter adjective, instruct, meaning "taught" or "furnished", which is now obsolete.
