intelligences
- 1Plural of intelligence.
Gardner's framework proposes that humans possess multiple distinct intelligences.
Science fiction often imagines vast alien intelligences far beyond anything we could understand.
Note
Only some meanings of intelligence take a plural, and they are the countable ones: beings with minds, as in alien intelligences, and agencies or units that gather secret information. Where the singular names the capacity itself or the gathered information, it is uncountable. Several pieces of secret news are intelligence, never intelligences. Speaking of multiple intelligences treats the capacity as a set of distinct kinds, which is what makes the plural possible there.
