interviews
- 1Plural of interview.
The reporter conducted dozens of interviews for the feature article.
Candidates who pass the first round move on to final interviews.
Note
A regular plural that carries every meaning of the noun at once. It covers a reporter's recorded conversations, a hiring panel's rounds of candidates and a detective's questioning of suspects. It even covers the old, now obsolete sense of formal meetings between monarchs. The same spelling is also the verb's present-tense form, and a determiner settles which one you have: the interviews are scheduled (noun), but she interviews applicants (verb).
- 2Third-person singular simple present of interview.
The recruiter interviews several applicants before making an offer.
Each season, the documentary series interviews survivors of historic events.
Note
Two constructions share this form, and they put the subject on opposite sides of the table. With an object, the subject asks the questions: the recruiter interviews applicants. Without one, the subject is the person being questioned: a candidate who interviews well comes across well when assessed. To tell them apart, check whether anything follows the verb.
She interviews well, even under pressure.
He interviews with two firms next week.
