items
- 1Plural of item.
The clerk scanned each of the items at the register.
Three items on the agenda were postponed until next week.
Note
Every kind of item pluralizes the same way: goods at a checkout, lines in an account, questions on a test, points on an agenda. The one catch is the informal sense, where a single item already means two people in a romance. A couple is an item, so items would be several couples. The same spelling also serves the verb meaning 'notes down'.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of item.
Note
The verb form that follows he, she, it or a singular noun, and it always takes an object: she items her expenses. To item something is to note it down, so the object is whatever gets recorded. A subject before it and an object after it are what keep it from reading as the everyday plural noun.
