japanned
Sayjuh-PAND/d͡ʒəˈpænd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of japan.
Craftsmen japanned the cabinet with layer after layer of dark lacquer.
The tea caddy was japanned in glossy black and finished with gilded edges.
Note
A craftsman's past tense, with the final n doubled before -ed, as in planned. It comes from lowercase japan, the hard black enamel varnish containing asphalt, turned into a verb. The same noun also names lacquerware, so japanned trays and caddies are lacquered ones. Obsolete British slang also used the verb to mean "ordain": in an old text, a man who was japanned had been ordained, not varnished.
